Progressive or Not Progressive?
I have new glasses! For quite a few years now I've worn traditional bifocals and gotten along just fine with them. The major drawback I had with them is when I play the piano! They just didn't work and I had to get a pair of "piano" glasses in order to be able to play with ease.
In time all good things have to be replaced and such was the situation with my good old specs! Soooo what do I do? Become progressive with the lenses that have 3 lense spheres all graduated together or stick with the familiar old? My optician asked me how many years I'd been wearing the regular bifocals and stated that after wearing them over 5 years, my brain might have a hard time adjusting! (I wonder how he knew my brain is lame!!) He also said that his mother hated her progressive lenses and had to switch back but his mother-in-law loved them! (Big help there!) Another negative was knowing that my good friend Mrs. RF didn't like them when she tried them and went back to the regular.
Sitting in the parking lot before going in to make the final decision, I made a last ditch effort call to my sister and she didn't answer! but I instead talked to her husband who absolutely loves his and he said my sister did too. They both adjusted quite quickly and they are many, many years older than I. (Or a least quite a few). Soooo I took the plunge.
When I first put them on and drove home, I wasn't sure at all and when the counter rolled back and forth (figuratively speaking) as I was baking dozens of cookies that night, I was even less sure. The trick, they say, is to not put your old glasses back on at all (which I was so wanting to do) but just keep on going. The next day I hoped against hope that my poor old brain would start to adjust. And it did! By mid afternoon, I almost forgot I was wearing new lenses! Can't say I'm home free yet, but I think I'm going to make it. Being able to read music comfortably at the piano for half an hour certainly was sweet!
Final note. When I walked into the dining room at Fairwood after first getting the glasses (got new frames, too) I wondered it anyone would notice. After just a few minutes, several did. Son #3 was late to the table and as he walked into dinner he took one glance at me and said "New glasses!' I knew he would because he's one of the most observant people I know Last night after being home for several hours, I asked son #2 if he noticed I had new glasses? He fumbled around saying he noticed my glasses but didn't realize they were new?? or some such thing. I have yet to test son#1 but I bet he will come in somewhere between son#3 and #2.

smack that un-noticing son! :-) heh, heh, heh.
and glad it is all working out. I am dreading the day I have to get bifocals, just from all the horror stories I hear. Oh, the pain of being human...

For the record- I did go back to the progressive ones and find I really like them the second time around. I would not want to go back to regular bifocals again.
Glad you are enjoying them! Keep with them, and you will not want to go back!

New glasses, too? Congratulations! You and me and Marie...anybody else?
I love being able to "hear" you online! I'm thinking of your cookie story, which made me laugh! Way to look out for those hungry boys... :O)

Do they let you try them out at all before buying? Glad you're adjusting to them...

Second son DID notice your glasses...right away, in fact, when I first looked at you playing dominoes in the dining room. I just wasn't confident enough to comment on them, because what if they WEREN'T new? YOU should know it's not a matter of noticing or not...it's a matter of not stating everything that enters into one's mind (which is third son's personality). And when you asked me if I noticed them, I basically said "Maybe" which is what I say to everything because it's just too stressful to try to say yes or no!

Liane, unfortunately you don't get a chance to "try" before you buy! The deal though is that you get to try them for 3 months and if you really don't like them, the company will make you regular bifocals plus even an extra pair of "reading" glasses for no extra charge. Of course regular bifocals are half the cost of the Progressive lenses where I get my glasses so I would still "lose" money. So far though, I think they'll be keepers.
