Surprised by Spit!
Oh my goodness! I had something unusual happen to me the other day--not the first time ever, but the first time ever from a teenager! We stopped at Dairy Queen on our way back from our Maine lighthouse venture to rendezvous with Chad for a nice family Sabbath treat. As I approached the door to enter, a teen age couple approached to exit. The girl was first and even though I was about to open the door, she charged right ahead as if she didn't even see me and she puckered up her lips and spit at me! It happened so fast and I was so shocked that I thought I might have been mistaken! But Neil, who was right behind me saw it and asked if that's what she had done! I knew then that I wasn't wrong after all. Her friend kindly held the door for both me and Neil as we entered, presumably to atone for her poor behavior, but Miss Spitter was long gone. Oh the delightful manners of some teenagers today! I thought to wonder if they were some of Chad's favorite students, but he assured us when he joined us that for the most part his students weren't apt to frequent eateries in that part of town.
Another recent "spitting" experience came as a result of my trying to curb a certain 4 year old's penchant for throwing sand bucketfuls of dirty rain water at the entrance of the main house, thereby soaking the doorstep and making it pretty impossible not to track said dirty water into the front hall. I thought if I spoke authoritatively perhaps I could gain enough respect to be listened to, but not so. Said 4 year old puckered up their lips and did the exact same thing as the 16 or 17 year old. But I wasn't shocked at all that time. I just turned my head away and laughed because coming from a 4 year old, what did I expect? Besides, I have the greatest regard for the parents of that child and know that they are diligently training all the time. Somehow a 4 year old's behavior seems more easily excused than a teenager's. But in either case, both are human beings whom Jesus loves and died for.

Yikes! What is the world coming to! At first I thought the title said: Surprised by the Spirit, and...well...maybe it is a good title, seeing that He helped you refrain from spitting back or doing anything else (even though the offender disappeared without a trace).
