Of Pillows

We have pretty interesting dinner conversations at our house from time to time. We had some good ones with Kendra home, but the three of us left had a pretty interesting one a couple days ago. It was about pillows--you know, the kind you sleep on!! It went something like this:

Me to N.: Do you think your pillow is getting too squishy? Should I buy you a new one?

K. What kind of pillow does Daddy use anyway?

Me: A feather pillow.

N: I don't know. I hadn't thought about it. Are they on sale?

Me: No, but I have a 20% off coupon at Bed, Bath and Beyond and I just have to use it!

At this point, quite a bit of laughter on N and K's part.

N: We probably should be careful about that--using a coupon to save money to buy something we don't really need. (Would I ever do that?!!)

This was followed by a discussion on price and quality and how it's more important to get something of quality that will last rather than the cheapest item.

N: Isn't the pillow I'm using one of the ones your mother made us for our wedding?
(My mother made us a beautiful set of real feather down pillows as a wedding gift) Now it was mine and K's turn to laugh, which we did uproariously and N joined in.

Me: N! We've been married for 33 years and you haven't had that pillow for the past 20 or 25!

N: Oh. I thought it would be fun to do an advertising blurb on the outstanding quality and durability of your mother's handiwork!

Much laughter.

This was followed by further discussion on types of pillows--foam rubber eg. (which I use and which after about 5-8 years has compacted in size and might need to be replaced, so maybe I should use that coupon. Son C got my last cast off. Wonder if he would like this one???!)

End of discussion.

You give me your CAST-OFFS??? I'm hurt! Maybe you should buy ME a new pillow with that coupon. I wonder what an unsquished-by-mom one would feel like.

Sometimes Daddy has no sense of the passage of time. Him thinking the pillow he had was a wedding present reminded me of his genuine surprise on several occasions that things weren't the same in Israel this last time he went.

"They always USED to have (blah, blah, blah) when we were here before!"

"Daddy! That was 30 YEARS ago!"
