Fast Cashier or What!!
Today while waiting for Kayla to finish orchestra, I popped into Stop and Shop in Peterborough to pick up a few groceries. I collected all my necessary items and headed for the checkout. Yipeee! I had under 12 items and could get in the Express line, only the express line wasn't so express as there were a number of folks ahead of me and one was even writing a check! Don't you just hate that--a check writer in the express lane?? Oh well, I heard someone say they had an open spot in Lane 6 so over I trotted with only one man ahead of me. Victory!
I placed my few items on the conveyer and then as I squeezed past my cart, I knocked a box of gum off the shelf, scattering packages all over the floor. Sigh. I picked them up, returned them to their little slot and turned to find my items already all checked through! I was astonished! but handed my Stop and Shop card to the speedy clerk and swiped my credit card and pressed "Enter." About then the man in front of me turned to the cashier and said, "What do I owe you?" Suddenly I realized that Mr. Speedy had run the man's groceries, then mine in one fell swoop and I had just paid for all of them!!! Oh brother. So much for getting through the line quickly and on to see Grandma Sweet. It took 5-10 minutes to sort all the mess out (at least our groceries were packaged in separate bags!) and Mr. Unknown paid me cash for his part of the groceries that I'd just charged to my credit card. All's well that ends well! but the next time around I won't trust a big space between my order and the next guy's. I'll try to put a divider in and I won't knock gum off the shelf and turn my back for 30 seconds!
As the supervisor was sorting out the confusing mess, speaking of Mr. Speedy, I told her, "At least he was fast!" but methinks perhaps he was just a bit too fast! Good for a laugh anyway.
